Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Episode 7 Lazily Shuffles to Its Next Destination (2)

The following contains spoilers for Episode 7 of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, "All's Well That Ends Well."

The first phase of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest's great titular century-long quest draws to a neat and surprisingly gentle conclusion in Episode 7, hence its very apt title, "All's Well That Ends Well." Fairy Tail's revival features much faster pacing than the original, a similar strength that Bleach's own revival series, Thousand-Year Blood War, has. This not only improves upon the original series' pacing, but helps it hit its major plot points on time and cue. However, this also comes at the cost of gradual worldbuilding and exploring the full impact of each major event.

This is clearest in Episode 7, which resolves the battle against Mercphobia, the fearsome Water Dragon God, too quickly for its own good. While it's pleasant to have such a neat and happy resolution to this conflict where no one needs to die, it also feels underwhelming. The stakes are also rather limited, considering what kind of monster Team Natsu just dealt with. Then, Episode 7 hurriedly moves Team Natsu toward their next target, the colossal dragon Aldoron. Though the adventure across Guiltina has a few worthwhile twists along the way, the episode still wasted the opportunity to explore a substantial new continent.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Episode 7 "All's Well That Ends Well" Recap and Spoilers

While the seventh episode of the newest Fairy Tail series is rather slow, it finally gives Natsu some lore that separates him from other anime leads.

1

On the plus side, the battle against Mercphobia the Water Dragon God had snappy pacing, suitable for a modern anime like this. The battle even included a personal twist with Igneel's son, Ignia, arriving to give Natsu Dragneel a hand. In Episode 7, the battle is undeniably over, and the dust is settling in a hurry. On some levels, it's a refreshing change of pace to have a shōnen battle end with such warm, fuzzy feelings and have nothing go terribly wrong. This also helps set the narrative apart from the increasingly gruesome, bloody and grim battles in recent My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen seasons. Some anime fans might even watch 100 Years Quest instead for its quaint but still enjoyable happy-go-lucky mood. But in hindsight, this also makes for some lukewarm storytelling.

It may be a relief that no one died or suffered serious injuries, with Mercphobia returning to his human form and agreeing to live in Ermina as an ordinary humanoid with no powers or drama. He retires as Ermina's greatest protector and threat, allowing the town to return to normal as the people deserved, but this resolution still feels rather cut-and-dried by most standards. It doesn't help that 100 Years Quest already has weak worldbuilding, even weaker than that of the original Fairy Tail. Episodes like this don't give fans much reason to care about the fate of towns like Ermina and their citizens, despite the collateral damage that just happened a few episodes ago. It's wonderful to see Mercphobia and his assistant Karameel survive, but there ought to be more at stake than their just happiness.

There simply isn't enough time to fully flesh out this setting and its characters to make explosive battles like the one in Episode 6 properly impactful. That's the price 100 Years Quest has to pay for its strong pacing. It delivers rapid-fire plot twists while making those very twists less meaty and memorable due to their lack of meaningful coverage. Ermina is saved, but in the long run, that means basically nothing. There aren't even any noteworthy citizens aside from Karameel and Mercphobia for Team Natsu to feel good about saving. And now, Team Natsu is on the move once again, visiting a town called Tekka to board a train and reach their next destination, Drasil. Fans can only hope that Drasil is a more memorable and exciting setting than Ermina was. This anime doesn't need One Piece-caliber worldbuilding as seen in the likes of Wano and Dressrosa, but it can still do better than coastal towns that no one, Team Natsu and fans alike, has any reason to remember.

This makes the battle against Mercphobia feel less like a major plot twist and more like a warm-up, or a sample of what the rest of 100 Years Quest is supposed to be like. Most likely, and ideally, the next four dragon gods will have bigger, better battles with more palpable stakes for everyone involved, and stronger worldbuilding to surround it all. It's nice to see the battle for Ermina end so cleanly, but Fairy Tail needs to up the ante in a hurry if it wants to at least pretend the heroes are being threatened by these mighty scaly beasts. Given what Mercphobia tells Team Natsu, that just might be the case.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Wreaks Havoc in an Emotionally Charged Battle

Episode 5 of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest begins an emotionally charged and tricky battle against Mercphobia as he wreaks havoc on the town of Ermina.

1

Earlier episodes of this new Fairy Tail anime introduced viewers to an all-new guild here on Guiltina, that being the Diabolos Guild. That guild's first twist was their best so far, with Diabolos being made up not of dragon slayers, but dragon eaters, wizards who actually eat dragon flesh to gain their powers. They haven't been seen eating a dragon yet, however, and this guild is starting to feel less threatening far quicker than it should. It's inevitable that the Fairy Tail guild will overcome Diabolos in the end, but until then, Diabolos needs to feel more like a proper and vivid threat. So far, they're not delivering.

Episode 7 shows Madmole, Kiria, and Skullion returning to their guild hall to meet their leader, Georg Reizen: a generically brutish-looking man who is anxious to eat a dragon's flesh for the first time in a while. The scene doesn't do much aside from revealing this guild's leader and briefly reminding fans that 100 Years Quest's main antagonists are still out there. Though they're ready to compete with Team Natsu to find the remaining dragon gods, this rival guild's complete introduction is a shame. Anime has plenty of cool villainous meetings or big teases of the villainous group's next move, but Diabolos' only scene in Episode 7 does little in that regard.

Sabertooth & the White Mage Make Their Next Moves

The Episode Establishes the White Mage as the Real Threat

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Episode 7 Lazily Shuffles to Its Next Destination (6)
  • The Sabertooth Guild used to be the strongest in the realm until Fairy Tail defeated them in the Grand Magic Games.
  • The Sabertooth Guild was once feared for its ruthless reputation. They've since mellowed out after meeting Fairy Tail.
  • The Sabertooh Guild is currently led by Sting Eucliffe.

Episode 7 also shows two other factions and their current actions, with minimal gains made. Sting, Rogue, and a few of their Sabertooth Guild allies arrive in Magnolia to speak with their Fairy Tail friends, only to find an empty town hall. It's an ominous sight that suggests that the White Mage has done something dreadful with the members of Fairy Tail, and it also serves as a token reminder that the Sabertooth Guild might play a supporting role in this story. It's not exactly a huge development, but it does just enough to inch the B-Plot forward, plus it gives Sabertooth fans something to look at.

The more ominous scene is equally short, but it does feature the current supervillain, that being the White Mage, who lives in Touka's body. The White Mage sits aboard a huge wooden ship that is presumably en route to Guiltina's shores, all so the White Mage can track down Team Natsu and use white-out magic to nullify their powers. It's just a token scene to keep this side plot moving, but it does its job, and the scene doesn't even show the defeated members of Fairy Tail. It's being left to fans' imagination what their current status is, and future episodes may reveal the answer. Perhaps the anime will reveal this during or right before the battle for Aldoron, seeing how the battles against the dragon gods are the most important story beats in this anime. That may do a fine job complicating the next battle to one-up the straightforward battle against Mercphobia.

Would Luffy Survive In These Anime Universes?

Would Luffy survive encounters with the likes of Vegeta, Sasuke, or Chainsaw Man's Devils?

Fairy Tail fans already saw a Bizarro version of the Fairy Tail guild with the original anime's pseudo-isekai adventure to Edolas, where Natsu and his guildmates met their magicless counterparts in the Edolas Fairy Tail Guild. Now, in 100 Years Quest, Team Natsu meets another imitation of their guild. Natsu and his friends spot an Erza lookalike, who has glasses and a sweater, and she brings them to her organization's building, with a sign identifying them as Fairy Nail. Unfortunately, Fairy Nail seem to be little more than a gag. Worse, it's a recycled joke that Fairy Tail had already told much better years ago.

There's still a chance that Fairy Nail may play a substantial role in the rest of 100 Years Quest, but at this rate, that probably won't happen. At the very least, Fairy Nail makes an ineffective first impression with throwaway humor, a silly name, and a lack of a strong hook of any kind. In fact, Episode 7 ends on this weak note, meaning this episode doesn't stick the landing as a side adventure in between two major dragon-based battles. A lot may have happened in Episode 7, but not much of it feels like it needs to be here, making it feel cluttered and silly, right to the last minute.
