Meaning behind ABBA's glaringly obvious band name revealed (2025)

ABBA might have been one of the biggest pop groups of all time, but what does their name actually stand for?

The Swedish band, made up of singers Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid ‘Frida’ Lyngstad, went on to sell more than 385 million records after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest.

Formed in 1972, ABBA released a multitude of hits, including Money, Money, Money, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

The foursome were active until 1982 when they took a hiatus, before returning again in 2018.

But do you know the meaning behind their iconic group name?

ABBA is actually an acronym formed from the first letters of each member's first name: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid.

According to reports, the group’s manager started referring to the band as ABBA in 1973 after having already tried out a myriad of names.

Last year, however, Bjorn branded the band’s name as 'stupid' and said he and his bandmates really wanted to call themselves The Northern Lights.

On the Rosebud podcast, he said that they didn't come up with the name, but had it imposed on them.

'We didn't have a choice in the matter,' he said. 'I thought it was such a stupid name. And it is.

'I had thought we should have a cool name like the Rolling Stones, or something like that. The Northern Lights was one of our thoughts – and here we are with ABBA.'

Bjorn said the foursome was given the name by others for convenience after they became established stars in their country.

He continued: 'As we were kind of famous, all famous in Sweden, we made our first records under Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid.

'The DJs on the radio, and everywhere else, in our office, they got tired of saying that – Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid – as you can imagine.

'And so they just abbreviated it – to the initials ABBA.'

Bjorn added: 'It's also the name of a very famous herring factory in Sweden – marinated herring.

'We had to ask them for permission to use the name, and they told us, "As long as you don't dabble in marinating herring."'

In recent weeks, DailyMail.com has revealed the real meaning behind Green Day’siconic band name.

The famous group, which consists of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, actually started out with the name Blood Rage when Billie and Mike were just 15 years old and had formed the band with bassist Sean Hughes and drummer Raj Punjabi.

A few months later they renamed themselves Sweet Children, but in 1989, the group ditched the name Sweet Children in order to avoid confusion with another local band, Sweet Baby.

They settled on the name Green Day, and it seems their new moniker had nothing to do with the color green, and everything to do with cannabis.

The phrase 'green day' was slang in the Bay Area - where the band originated - for spending a day doing nothing but smoking marijuana.

Billie confirmed this is why they chose the name and told Bill Maher in a 2010 interview: 'It was absolutely about pot.'

In addition, Panic! At The Disco fans are only just realizing the true meaning behind the group’s title.
