Wolfenstein 3D Walkthrough - Complete Game Guide (2025)

Wolfenstein 3D - Walkthrough overviewWolfenstein 3D Walkthrough - Complete Game Guide (1)

Grab your guns soldier, it's time to go hunting for treasure and kill some Nazis. No, this isn't an old Call of Duty game, but rather the great-grandaddy of shooters - Wolfenstein 3D.
You play as BJ Blazkowicz, blasting your way through level after level of Nazis, mutants, and even Mecha-Hitler himself.
The game is a first-person shooter, and is over 20 years old (originally coming out in 1992). As such, it definitely shows its age. Visuals aside, each level is "pseudo 3D" in that there is no Z-axis (up and down), only X- & Y-axes (left/right and forward/backward). A map of each level can be easily represented as a "flat" 2D image and I'll be providing a link with images showing each map for each level showing where the exits are, etc.
The game itself is broken into 6 "episodes", where each episode consists of a handful of levels (10 per episode including the secret levels). You don't have to play the secret levels for any achievements, so you'll end up playing 6 x 9 = 54 levels in all.
All the achievements, save one, can be nabbed in a single play through on "Bring it On" difficulty, the lone exception being "You Are Death Incarnate" which requires you to beat a single level on the hardest difficulty. As such, I'll be walking through a single run, giving a few tips along the way.
Let's get on with it then, shall we?

Wolfenstein 3D - General hints and tips

Let's start with some general tips for the game:

  • The AI in this game is dumb. Incredibly dumb. Often the easiest tactic is to run into a room, fire a shot off, then retreat back through the door you came in, then wait for the enemies to come running through & pick them off one at a time.
  • You can save the game at any time, take advantage of it. Some of the later episodes can get a bit challenging.
  • Every map follows roughly the same pattern: blast your way through the level trying to find the exit, then take the exit. There is a single achievement ("None Left Standing") for killing everyone, and one achievement ("Clean out the Castle") for getting all the treasure in a single level, but once you have both of those there's no reason (achievement wise) to go for all the kills or find all the treasure
  • There are also secret levels in each episode, but you do not need to play them for any of the achievements. As such, I'll be encouraging you in the walkthrough to avoid these levels.
  • Weapon-wise, some people really like the chaingun, however, I'm partial to the machine gun. The chaingun tends to fly through the ammo too fast. This changes a bit when you fight tougher enemies or larger groups of enemies, but if it's a couple dogs or guards, the chaingun tends to be overkill. The knife & pistol generally don't get used unless you have to (if you're out of ammo or just don't have a MG or CG yet).
  • Each level has one or two exits that look like elevators. If there are two exits, then one will take you to floor 10, which is the secret level for that episode. Again, as mentioned, you do not need to beat the secret levels for any achievements. There's no harm in playing them of course, but they're not necessary.
  • For each level, I'm providing a map of the level. These screenshots were taken from the Wikia.com site for the game (http://wolfenstein.wikia.com/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D), and were originally actually a screenshot of the level loaded in the freely available level editor for the original PC version of the game. Some things to note about the maps:
    • Exits are the gold coloured wall blocks
    • Wall blocks with a white outline are secret spots you can push to reveal a hidden area in-game
    • The chaingun and machine gun are both helpfully labelled as a blue 'g' on the map - the chaingun is a lighter shade (cyan) while the machine gun is a darker colour (more of a teal colour)
    • Keys are labelled with the letter "k", and are coloured either yellow or cyan depending upon the door (the corresponding door will be coloured the same, either gold or cyan)
  • Generally, the pattern I followed while playing the game was at the start of the level, I'd save in my top slot. Then as I progressed through the level, I'd use the next two slots in alternating fashion until I was done. This meant that at any time I could always start the level over if need be.
  • As for the bosses (there's one on the 9th floor of each episode), there's no real trick for beating them. For the most part it's use the chaingun & mow through them, while trying to avoid when they shoot. If you're having trouble remember two things:
    • you can save at any point
    • there are secret areas on the boss levels which contain LOTS of health & ammo, look at the maps for each level for details

Other than that, the game is about as simple as it gets. Grab gun, shoot evil Nazis, find exit, rinse & repeat.

Wolfenstein 3D - Story Walkthrough - Episode 1

On this episode you'll get a couple extra achievements on the first level. On the main menu go to Play -> New Game -> Episode 1: Escape from Wolfenstein, and make sure you pick "Bring 'em on!" difficulty.

(original source:http://wolfenstein.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_1/Floor_1)

This first level is a bit special in that you'll want to get all the treasure, kill all the enemies, and find at least one secret on it.
I'll give a bit more detailed of a walkthrough on this level specifically to make sure you get everything, subsequent levels I'll largely defer to the online maps for you to refer to.
You start in a room, go forward and through the door. To your right there's an open hallway, go down here and kill the single guard on your left (kill 1/18). Retreat back and go through the door to the north and enter a larger room. Continue on to the door at the far end & open it to find a large open room with a door between two wooden panels straight ahead, and a single door to the right between two blue rock walls. Go through the door to the right.
Inside this room you'll find two guards patrolling, kill them both (kills 2/18 and 3/18).
There are two doors in this area. One at the end of the pathway to the right and one in front of you. Go to the one on the right to find a room with two dogs in it, kill them both (kills 4/18 and 5/18). Retreat back and open the other door to find a room with 1 guard and 1 dog. Kill them both for kills 6/18 and 7/18.
Retreat back to the big larger room and open the door between the two wooden panels. Inside there will be wooden walls and one guard at the far end who sees you, kill him for kill 8/18. Note that it looks like there are paths on the left and right. On the left side there is a single guard hiding in a cubby hole. Kill him for kill 9/18. After you kill him walk up to the painting of a bird on a statue and press A (use) to reveal a secret area and pop the following achievement:

Hey, That Wall Moves!

Find one secret

Go into the newly revealed area to find a machine gun and some health. Continue on with the level. In the next room there are two guards (kills 10/18 and 11/18), and doors to your left and right. Go through the door on the right first to find a small room containing 7 pieces of treasure (7/23), collect all the treasure then proceed to the other door. Open it, walk inside, fire a single shot and you'll hear some Nazi's get 'activated'. There are two in here, kill them both for kills 10/18 and 11/18.
Proceed through the next door to find 2 more guards. Kill them for kills 12/18 and 13/18. Also in this room are 7 pieces of treasure (14/23). Also in this room there is a portrait of Hitler on the wall between two plants. Press A on this to reveal another secret area containing another 7 pieces of treasure (21/23) and a bunch of ammo.
Go through the door in the previous room to find an empty room with a door at the far end. Go through this door and find two patrolling guards (kills 14/18 and 15/18).
After killing them, go to the door to the north and open it. Inside is a fairly large area with a single guard patrolling. Firing a single shot in this area will trigger him (you'll hear him talk once you fire a shot). Kill him for kill 16/18. There is also a single treasure cup in one of the cubby holes in this area (22/23). Open the door nearest that single piece of treasure to find a small room with a medkit.
Go back to the other door in this area, and open it to find two guards (kills 17/18 and 18/18) and the level exit. These are the last of the enemies on the level.
DO NOT GO THROUGH THE EXIT YET.
Instead there is a secret passage on the wall to the right of the exit in the corner. Press it to reveal a secret area with a medkit on the left. On the wall immediately opposite the medkit is another secret passage. Inside this passage is another level exit (this takes you to the secret level -- level 10). There is one more secret however on the left wall. Press it to find a small room with an extra life (a blue ball with a picture of your face on it). Pick it up (it counts as a treasure so it's 23/23).
Retreat back to the level exit (the first one you saw) and flick the switch to end the level. You'll then unlock:

From here on to the end of the episode you can just focus on playing through the levels as quickly as you can. Again, consult the maps if you need help.

Wolfenstein 3D - Story Walkthrough - Mop Up

You'll notice that there's one achievement left. I intentionally left this for last so that you'll be familiar with how the game works, etc, before tackling this one level on the game's hardest difficulty.

To get this one, start up a new game on "I am Death Incarnate" difficulty. Personally I think the first level of episode 1 ("Escape from Castle Wolfenstein") is the easiest.
Now just beat this level. Doesn't matter how many kills, treasure or secrets you get, you just need to get to the level exit and flick the switch. Again, you can save at any time, so take advantage of this. As well, remember that the AI is dumb - go into a room, fire a shot, retreat back, and wait for them to come to you as much as you can.

As an additional tip, the Wikia.com page for this level (http://wolfenstein.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_1/Floor_1) has tips specific to this difficulty, which I'll repeat here for reference:

Go to the door with the dead guard by it. If you want ammo, turn right, but fight the guards. If you want to get done quicker, go left. After going left, open the door at the end. Fight the guard in here and go through the door at the end of this hall. Fight the guard who is walking west and the standing one. You may turn right and open the door. Or go straight and open the door. If you go right, you will see a dog and you can go straight or right again. If you go right again, you will see two guards at the end by the door. Open this door and three dogs come to run up to you, so get out your knife. After they die, get the bad food in a corner (it's really good for you!) Go back to where you could have gone straight. Open this door and fight the guards and dog. Get the food if you need it. If you decided to go straight when you fought the walking guard, read here. Go out of the room and a guard will see you. When another guard sees you, go towards him and fight him*. When this is done, go to the door at the end. When you see the guards in here, fight them and turn right if you want to fight a guard and get treasure. But if you don't want to, go left. When you enter the next room, there will be two guards past the corner. After you fight them, open up the next door. There are five guards and treasure in this room so get everything*. Turn left and open this door. Go through the little hall, fight the guard, and open the next door. In this room are two guards standing, and there was a walking guard, but he is most likely in the next room. Go out either door. Let's say you go out the right door. Turn right and there will be a guard that sees you. Fight him and get the piece of treasure. If you need extra health, turn right and go through the door or turn left and go to the end of the hall. You might see another guard. When you get to the other end of the hall keep going, fight the guard you might see, and go through the door. Here is the last room***. Fight the last three guards and get in the elevator. Press the switch and you are done.

Once the level is done you'll unlock:

You Are Death Incarnate
