Home / About / Communities / Newnan
Say hello to our good friend, the city of Newnan. You may want to pull up a chair, because this county seat has a lot to talk about. Like the fact that the town was able to save its arse, er, architecture, during the Civil War due to its status as a hospital city. That’s right, the people of Newnan quite literally put the “hospital” in hospitality for both the Union and the Confederate troops, which allowed its residents to heal the ailing while also preserving their homes. And now you, dear reader, have the opportunity to explore not just one but six historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places.
And you were wondering why the town’s tagline is “The City of Homes”?
What Makes Newnan Special
Boasting historic architecture, culinary delights and a downtown square that would make even Norman Rockwell jealous, opportunities abound in this city.
Yes, Alan Jackson Is From Newnan
Newnan is the birthplace of famed country music star Alan Jackson, as well as his wife, Denise. In fact, in 2018, the singer was honored with his own mural on the side of the Redneck Gourmet building at 11 North Court Square in downtown Newnan.
Barbecue With a Side of History
Sprayberry’s Barbecue is a beloved Newnan barbecue joint that opened in 1926 in a gas station before expanding to a full-fledged restaurant. The eatery is renowned for its famous Brunswick stew, which was canned during World War II and sent overseas to the soldiers.
Way Down Yonder on the Chattahoochee
The 2,910-acre Chattahoochee Bend State Park is the second-largest state park in Georgia and provides an ideal spot for kayaking. After a day of paddling, rent a nearby cottage or campsite to relax amid the forest’s natural beauty.
